Mesa Area
Mesa County is known for its scenic views, orchards and prime agricultural lands, and wildlife habitat in Glade Park and along the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers.  This unique landscape is home to 75 percent of our state’s vineyards, as well as Colorado’s famous peach orchards in Palisade.

There are significant opportunities to protect resources of statewide significance, but a scarcity of dollars to get the job done.  The cities and Mesa County do not have a public, dedicated revenue source and the local land trust does not have strong private fundraising capacity.

CCT recently funded a number of projects to advance conservation efforts in Mesa County.  These include:

  • $70,000 toward the purchase of conservation easements on a key property in Glade Park and one in the community separator area near Palisade.  The Glade Park area contains critical habitat for the threatened Gunnison Sage Grouse and other important species. The Palisade separator encompasses some of the most productive agricultural areas in the state and contains riparian habitat and wetlands along the Colorado River.
  • $25,000 for outreach, education and analyses associated with forwarding a local public funding measure for land conservation.
  • $10,000 for fundraising assistance for the Mesa Land Trust to increase their ability to raise private funds.
  • Placement of a CCT Fellow at the Mesa Land Trust to assist with the accomplishment of MLT's conservation priorities.

Additional High Priority Needs/Next Steps:

  • Conservation of wildlife habitat and scenic corridors in Glade Park and in the orchard and community separator lands near Palisade.
  • Passage of a local dedicated revenue source for the county.
