Deputy Director for Programs

Development & Marketing Coordinator

Position Objectives: The Development and Marketing Coordinator position is the informational foundation of Colorado Conservation Trust’s marketing efforts and major donor cultivation work to increase philanthropic giving for land conservation. The position buttresses work performed by the senior staff through ensuring the accuracy of the organization’s donor/prospect database, developing print and electronic marketing collateral, assisting with media outreach and organizing donor events.
Necessary Skills: Extremely organized and possessing meticulous attention to detail, strong written and verbal abilities, fluent with the use and programming of databases (experience with e-Tapestry is a plus), experienced in the design and production of marketing materials including use of blogs and the web.
Job Duties: Under direction from the Deputy Director and working in conjunction with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, this position is primarily responsible for implementing programs in the following functional areas:
A. Development and Fundraising
1. Donor Tracking. Responsibilities include: 1) oversee and maintain the donor tracking database to effectively track past personal contacts, anticipated future contacts and giving histories of CCT individual donors, foundations, corporations and prospects, 2) ensure all personal contact information contained in the database is accurate and updated regularly, 3) develop report protocols to facilitate easy tracking of donor/prospect information 4) train staff on the use of the donor tracking software.
2. Annual Fund. Responsibilities include: 1) create effective messages and implement mailings for the mid-year and year-end appeals, and other appeals if determined appropriate, and 2) directly produce or manage vendors as needed for annual fund appeals.
3. Corporations and Foundations. Responsibilities include: 1) in conjunction with program staff, develop fundraising timelines, write effective grant requests, and track sent applications, 2) ensure timely submission of post-award grant reports for existing foundation and corporate supporters.
4. Prospect Research. Responsibilities include: 1) using a variety of research tools, research potential individual donors, foundations and corporations, 2) scan relevant media and update donor/prospect files for recent activity, 3) create comprehensive profiles for all major donors/prospects, foundations and corporations.
5. Fundraising and Donor Cultivation Events. Responsibilities include: 1) organize and coordinate donor cultivation dinners and events, 2) oversee registration and silent auction of CCT’s signature “Q for Conservation” fundraising event.
B. Marketing/Communications
1. Website. Responsibilities include: 1) work with staff to continually update content to ensure accuracy, timeliness and relevance of information posted on the organization’s website, 2) develop a plan for the complete redesign of the website to: a) enhance the clarity of information presented, b) facilitate the ease of navigation within the site and c) allow timely blog postings of current activities and announcements, 3) develop protocols and, if necessary, assist staff in posting timely blog entries about organizational activities.
2. E-Blast. Responsibilities include: 1) develop schedule and potential themes of periodic (ideally bi-monthly) E-Blast electronic newsletters, 2) maintain, update and expand recipient email list, 3) write, produce and distribute E-Blasts according to the schedule.
3. Reports and Publications. Responsibilities include: 1) assist in the writing, production and distribution of the organization’s annual report, 2) assist in the writing, design and production of other organizational publications and newsletters.
4. Media. Responsibilities include: 1) maintain an accurate statewide press list and contacts in major media markets throughout the state, 2) maintain a clipping archive of opinion columns and news reports in which CCT accomplishments and projects are listed, 3) assist in media relations activities.
5. Marketing Material. Responsibilities include: 1) ensure all marketing materials are accurate and updated, 2) write, design and produce new marketing material, including PowerPoint presentations, 3) write and produce collateral materials for appeal campaigns.
C. Organizational Support
1. Office Functions. Responsibilities include: 1) open and route mail appropriately within the office, 2) assist in answering and routing phone calls, 3) coordinate with the Finance and Administration Coordinator tracking of donations, including recording donations received according to established protocols, 4) provide operational support to the Executive Director and Deputy Director as needed.

Deputy Director for Programs

The Deputy Director is responsible for designing, developing and delivering all program functions of the Colorado Conservation Trust (CCT). Primary responsibilities include: 1) managing CCT programs and program staff, 2) raising funds for program activities, and 3) serving as a member of CCT’s management team.
Essential functions:
Program design, development and funding
- Ensure that CCT’s current program offerings are constantly improving in quality and impact
- Design and deliver new cutting edge programs to increase the pace and effectiveness of land conservation efforts in Colorado
- Raise funds from foundations and major donors to support program activities
Program and staff management
- Manage all program and CCT loan fund related budgets and reporting requirements
- Ensure CCT program staff is of the highest quality and operating at the highest level of professionalism
Partnerships and collaboration
- Serve as CCT’s lead for the Colorado Conservation Partnership
- Maintain strong collaborative relationships with Colorado Coalition of Land Trusts, Land Trust Alliance, appropriate state and federal agencies and other open space partners
Other
- Serve as liaison to program related committees of the CCT Board of Directors
- Engage in select public policy issues related to CCT’s mission
- Provide written program content for various CCT uses
Reporting Relationships:
- Reports to the Executive Director
- Manages program staff (currently three)
Qualifications:
- Minimum ten years of diverse experience in land conservation or a closely related field, including supervisory experience
- Demonstrated success in programmatic fundraising, including grant writing
- Sound understanding of transactional financing
- Ability to work effectively with wide range of people, including Board members, elected/appointed officials, conservationists, donors and the media
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- High level of energy, initiative and integrity
- Commitment to and passion for protecting Colorado’s special places
- Willingness to travel in and out of state
- Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree preferred
